Exciting things at the studio

27.10.09

We’ve been hibernating, silently plotting, growing stronger, turning green…

For too long we’ve looked dead over here at this URL. But the truth couldn’t be further.
In the past year, we’ve wrangled open-source publishing platforms like Textpattern and Wordpress, used them to perform like complex content management systems, and ultimately conquered Drupal to create an e-commerce and gallery showcase site at agentgallerychicago.com.

We’ve nailed out the kinks for the Atlanta band Gringo Star, always great musicians and now good friends.

We’ve studied interface design, harnassed analytics, absolutely raped social marketing’s promoting power to tout my partner’s popular documentary, A Crosstown Classic Story.

And now, we’re ready to open the gates.

Announcing the beginning of our exciting business venture, the independent Web design and Web video production company, 187 Media Studio, based in Chicago.

Between our friends, neighbors, mentors and selves, we’ve got a army of talent. Pilsen’s finest are itching to amaze you.

The logistics of our new cinema

British writer and filmmaker Matt Hanson was featured in the magazine as one of the 10 people who could change the world for his work to change the way we produce and consume film. By soliciting a small amount of money from anyone willing to find the independently produced “Swarm of Angels”, he’s hoping to “kick-start a creative and business model for the viable production of large-scale free cultural works.”

The Blago Show

Blago demonstrated some moxie, determined not to let one man’s loss be another man’s gain. Instead, with one arm around Goldberg, leaning in to answer her questions, Blago demonstrated that even if he’s not honorable, at least he’s making this downward spiral fun to watch.

Innovation vs. Immitation: Newsprint gets back to basics

A nascent newspaper here in Chicago is turning heads with its seemingly backwards production model:

It harvests the best blog content on the Web and prints it on paper. Twice a day. Bloggers write it and the Printed Blog—well—prints it.

Panda cars meet practical information. Whoda' thought?

I really wanted to know why five cop cars arrived, stormed the apartment across Milwaukee Avenue and led a dude without shoes across the street into an armored car on one of the coldest nights this December.

Then I remembered…EveryBlock!

At Ease

What I want to say is that I’m here because after years of exercising the First Amendment, moving on to the second seems practical. But I didn’t quite ask for this.

Board quashes Plaza homeless sleepout

The Alligator metro editor sent me to cover this 7:30 a.m. city meeting and report back on what the board planned to do about a downtown parking garage. The topic was hardly a story, but during the meeting one board member procured an e-mail she had received from County Commissioner Rodney Long. Long was asking the board to support his planned homeless sleepover on the Downtown Plaza to increase awareness of poverty in Gainesville.
The board members found the planned event to be distasteful and passed a motion to disallow it. The whole process took about two minutes. I followed sources after the meeting adjourned and told my editor we could break a much bigger story. He agreed, and the story ran the next day.
