Agent Gallery Chicago
Accommodating atypically attractive taste, a veteran curator of oddities with an artist’s eye for placement had a entrepreneur's need to sell.
The design of Agent Gallery Chicago's site relies on contrast of content with layout. The rich photographic documentation of rustic pieces of machinery, medical models and weathered classic prints are enhanced by a minimalist layout devoid of color or flourish. The large front-page photo focuses and compels users to select a menu item and explore other oddments and art for sale.
Content management is automated where appropriate to accommodate the limited human resources of a one-man operation. To increase the utility of the site for frequent buyers like interior designers and dealers, new arrivals (uploaded within the past two weeks) are automatically filed under the corresponding menu item. Likewise, to prevent unintended double-sales, the owner specifies a quantity of the item when he uploads it, which decreases after each sale and removes the listing completely when the stock is depleted. Automating these tasks frees the owner from the responsibility of briefing dealers daily over the phone, or manually removing listings as soon as items are sold, so the client can focus energy on his business' growth and acquisition.
Agent Gallery also sells work by a rotating list of artists, so the site provides a biographical page for each, with samples of their work on display.
